This volume collects essays focussing, from different perspectives, on the problem of the relationship between fiction and reality or, in Tolkienian terms, between ‘secondary’ (sub-created) and ‘primary’ (created) worlds, between sub-creation(s) and Creation. This relationship is a central concern of Tolkien’s literary endeavour, as he himself acknowledged in a famous letter (no. 131, n. 145):
‘[My work] is, I suppose, fundamentally concerned with the problem of the relation of Art (and Sub-creation) and Primary Reality’.
